Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is the science of human behaviour. It is the process of systematically applying interventions based on the principles of behaviour to improve socially significant behaviour in a meaningful way.
Specifically, ABA is an evidenced based, intensive education therapy that involves using principles of behavious such as positive reinforcement to increase learning and desired behaviour and to decrease unwanted problem behaviour. ABA helps children develop their social, academic, self-help and communication skills needed to interact with others and cope with the challenges of daily life. It takes the form of a structured, individualized program to meet the need of each child.
Through research, these principles have been proven to be effective at modifying a variety of behaviours across a variety of individuals. Almost all children make significant gains and a high percentage of pre-school children with ASD can achieve normal mainstream education with early intervention and treatment.
